What is knurling?

In mechanical technique, knurling is used to roll a cylindrical surface of a workpiece with one or a pair of rollers with sharp teeth. The teeth of the roller don’t have the cutting effect but can press and deform the surface with a pattern. The purpose of knurling as following:

1. Make the workpiece easy for the user to hold.
2. Increase the aesthetics of the object.
3. Expand diameter to make compression fit

The common patterns used in knurling are straight lines and diamond-shaped lines. There are 3 kinds of thickness of the knurling lines:

1. Coarse lines (pitch under 0.8 mm)
2. Medium lines  (pitch 0.8-1.4 mm)
3. Fine lines (pitch above 1.4 mm)

The selection principle is mainly based on the diameter of the workpiece. The coarse-diameter workpiece is rolled with a coarse pattern, and the fine diameter is selected with a fine pattern. The groove pitch of knurling depends on the distance between the cutter tooth, no matter straight lines, and diamond-shaped lines.
